Magic

True Magic

If you know any the true words of the world you can affect them, but this also links you into this as well. You can’t use True Magic unless you yourself have been given a True Name.

While the word for fire might do things alone, without direction things might go wrong. Just use one magical word: -2 to the roll because it is unfocused, and a failure might be way more problematic than a focused failure. But sometimes no other words match with what you want to do, so go for it.

You start with 12 verbs/nouns/adjectives.
Ex: Call, Conceal, Heal, Hex, Move, Strike, Frost, Memory, Shield, Sound, Spirit, Wood

Weaker Folk Magic

Use your own soul, use ingredients, use what’s around, rely on patron, or steal magical power from surroundings. Pick one. In more game terms:

FOLK MAGIC IN A NUTSHELL

When a Hero uses folk magic in an action, identify or decide what their source of Spryd is and deliver Consequences as follows:

  • OWN SOUL (Inherent) Give them drained, tired, or exhausted, and/or Expose them to Twilight beings
  • INGREDIENT (Inherent) Consume (scratch) the ingredient tag and/or reduce ingredients or materials by 1 (more if they generated Consequences)
  • POOL (Inherent) Reduce the pool’s abundant or tended by 1 (more if they generated Consequences)
  • PATRON (Typical) Reduce favored by 1 (more if they generated Consequences)
  • INNATE Match Consequences to the magic used
  • DEFILE (Inherent) Give them or others around ravenous, wolfish, ambitious, fatigued, withered, etc. and/or Expose them to Twilight beings.

Alchemy

Potent magic but requires time and ingredients to make. But easier to share and you just need a recipe and not magical affinity. It might in fact be even easier if you don’t, less chance of magic to interfere with the potions.

Recipes for concoctions are hard to come by and even harder to invent or discover. Every alchemist or herbalist has a list of their known recipes, which are often recorded in a thick tome or a sheaf of scribbled notes. A player keeps this list of known recipes along with the Hero’s cards or sheet. The recipe itself is not a tag.
